SHUT 'ER DOWN!!

Well, even though the media is doing what they always do and making the budget dispute now seem to be unique and disastrous, it is neither.

Just since 1980 there have been 10 government shutdowns. Some were for only certain branches of the government (in a bit of disclosure, I am not sure how the government can only shut down only some parts) and some were for only one day (actually only part of one day).

The last two were during the Trump administration. Those times the executive branch (Trump administration) wanted to set some limits on spending and the Democratic controlled Congress did not. The entire government was shut down for three days in January 2018 and then in December of 2018 the majority of the government was shut down for 35 days into January of 2019.

During the Obama administration there was a complete government shutdown for 16 days. The Obama administration was trying to increase spending and the Republican led Congress was trying to set limits. (See the previous posts on spending if you want to see that there have not been cuts - pretty much EVER). FYI, this time the "cuts" are in the growth, not the actual spending. But, that is another issue.

The government was shutdown for 21 days during the Clinton administration as well.

The point is, even if the government is "shutdown" life goes on. As for not being able to pay Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid bills, the military, etc.; that is mostly hyperbole. The government takes in money every quarter. The problem is, spending is greater than the intake of revenue, but there is always money coming in. (again, see the previous post - and many others prior to that - for more information) We have survived shutdowns running weeks and we have all survived as has the government.

As a final comment - spending DOES have to be cut or we will cease to have a viable economy. The spending bill passed by Congress (yes, there is one, but the Biden administration does not like it) has NO CUTS in it to spending. It has cuts to GROWTH in spending going forward. That is deemed to be radical and dangerous by the Democrats/Biden administration. SMH

Fame is Fleeting and some bug stuff

Well I am writing this from the scene of one of my latest moments of glory - the Comfort Suites in Colonial Heights, Va. For those of you that do not take notes of all my achievements - that was the hotel where I was (drum roll please - ) Guest of the Day about a month ago. I drove up (and parked in the Platinum Elite member space - I might add) gathered my goodies and headed in. I thought of pulling a hat down over my head and putting my collar up to hide from the photographers and autograph fans, but I had no hat and the crowds just were not really a problem. I ambled to the front desk and it was the same girl! Surely here the recognition would reign! But as I approached her I glanced to the reader board - the same reader board that not so long ago was praising me as Guest of the Day! I staggered a bit under the realization that there was another name on MY sign! Then it hit me - Guest of the Day! I had lived my glorious 24 hours and now it was time to move on. OH WOE IS ME. I curse ...

A Three Hour Tour, or, Perchance to drown

Imagine you and your spouse, or significant other, are on a nice boat ride called life. You are on this inconceivably large boat in a sea of unimaginable size on a trip of indeterminate length. Once in a while, you go through some beautiful. almost indescribable days where birds sing, wonderful angelic music accompanies you in your daily activities , and everything you want is there before you. Then there are the dark and stormy days where all you can do is hold on to the rail and upchuck your lunch into the water. Most of the days, however, are just a boat ride. One day your spouse falls overboard, fully clothed, and for no apparent reason. You quickly toss them a line, and say"hold on, I'll get you out!" There is no reason to panic, people fall into the water all the time. Plus, they are a fairly strong swimmer, we will get them out. So, you start pulling on the rope. After pulling and pulling you notice they are not any closer to the boat. You decide you need help....
