Some Basic Thoughts

Just a brief post with some reminders (or maybe some original thoughts for some of you!) 1)  Censorship, especially of speech, is a bad thing in almost every case . Freedom of Speech was made as part the First Amendment to the Constitution (in the Bill of Rights) because it was recognized that the most effective way to silence dissent was to limit its spread. To limit the spread of differing ideas is to limit the possibility of dialogue and growth and leads to tyranny.  2) Discrimination against a group of people will never counteract or neutralize discrimination that was fostered upon another group of people . (also can be read: two wrongs don't make a right - no more comment is needed) 3) Diversity for the sake of diversity is discrimination . See #2. If you select a person for a position solely based on the color of their skin, their gender, or any other attribute other than their ability, you are practicing discrimination. Selecting the best candidate, based upon their qua...

Some Random Thoughts of the Day

The definitions are based on the Merriam-Webster online dictionary and my own interpretations - some much more the latter than the former. The thoughts are all mine... Intelligence - n . the ability to learn and/or understand thoughts, concepts and ideas; the ability to reason. Knowledge - n . accumulation of facts and of knowing something through experience or association - learning. Experience - n . gaining knowledge through or being affected by observation or participation in an activity or event. Wisdom - n . the application of intelligence and knowledge with understanding, tempered with experience. I have a lot of formal as well as experiential learning. I have done many, many hours of study in classrooms, seminars, courses; and through the great schoolroom of life. In all this I have met many very intelligent young people. Many of these intelligent youth had already attained great, if limited, knowledge; at least the kind that can be learned from a book or class. Very few had...

You Look Fine To Me (a follow up to "You Don't Look Right!" - kinda)

I actually got a few comments via email on the post about the Supreme Court and their ruling on affirmative action. In case you do not follow this blog or keep up with the Supremes and their rulings - late last month they ruled that affirmative action (the conscious process of admissions where candidates are admitted to a school based on race/ethnicity vs qualifications, for the purpose of diversity) was not constitutional. I agreed with the ruling. I am not going to repeat my words - look back a few posts. On race relations, bigotry, and discrimination I have an observation. Any of you that have kids and allow them to play freely at a public park know this. I just got back from an afternoon out with two of my grandchildren. A girl 8 1/2, and a boy 6. After a gourmet meal at McDonald's we went to a city park with a playground that was nearby. There were four or five children that were already there when we got there, playing on the slides, see-saw, swings, etc. These kids were of...
