It's the Supremes! (but where's Diana Ross?)

Today is June 24th 2022, This day will be remembered as the day the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v Wade. I will start out by stating my personal feelings on abortion to clear the air. I have no problem with abortion on demand, even as birth control, in the first trimester (which was what Roe said, fyi). The age of viability (that age where a fetus is more likely to survive than die if delivered) is 24 week currently. The youngest baby to survive was 21 weeks and 5 days old. That is why I have no issue with first trimester (@13 weeks) abortions are fine for any reason. I also have no issue with an abortion at any stage (with some caveats) in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. I think that decision should be up to the mother, her family - to the extent she wants them involved -, her doctor, and whatever higher power she may beleive in. So, this is not my cheer for the end of abortion!  In case this is being read in some distant future...

A Christmas Poem

Just Days Before Christmas Twas a few days before Christmas and all through the land, People were losing their minds over a new tax plan. Their concern is too much money Might remain with the rich. Not even sure who gets what, they decide just to bitch. Of course, when people are asked who the rich might be Basically, they say, “anyone that has more money than me”. Our worries of government and taxes and such, really don’t help advance mankind much. To concern ourselves with where capitals might be In some faraway land that we’ll probably never see. Is a waste of our efforts, And can cost us our minds. We should just try to be more understanding and kind. We can help one another not elected people on a hill. No matter the rhetoric or passage of a bill. Tis the season to be jolly, And to love one another. To treat all we meet like a sister or brother. Kindness is not made by legislatures afar. But comes from our hearts And...

HEADLINES

It is time for some humor. You folks put up with my "serious rants" long enough. These are REAL (or very clever fakes) headlines from around the world: Squirrel 'Detained' by German Police for Stalking Woman Police originally thought she was nuts.  Man Shoots Firework From Top of His Head, Dies Everyone knows you should hold them in your hands! Pittsburgh Man Charged With Robbing Bank With a Sex Toy Too many...Too easy...Insert your answer here (pun intended) Shark Killed in Traffic Crash Let this be a lesson to you - SHARKS CAN'T DRIVE! German Asparagus Pickers Mistaken for Armed Gang Sure, that's what they want us to think!! An expert was called in to confirm! Read the comment in the subtitle.  Who'da thunk it! They consulted with the bug expert I bet.  And finally: Now that is a tough interview - put the rookie on it! That's all for now. SMILE, WOULD YA!! Remember LIFE is a sex...

I AM AN AMERICAN - reposted by request

I just looked and the last post I did was also this one, on this date, a year ago. So, I just made a Mid-Year Resolution - I will start posting again! (YAAAA - GOES THE CROWD!) This is the only post out of the hundreds I have done that I have ever been asked to re-post. I have had at least one request every year since 2009 when it originally posted. Look tomorrow for a NEW 4th of July post. For now, here you go: I am an American. Like the majority of those living in this country, I was born here as were my parents and their parents. Like the great majority of those living in this country, my ancestors were not born here. A direct decendent on my paternal side immigrated here in 1789 from England. However, I am not an English-American or even a European-American. It bothers me to see people described (by self or others) as Irish-American, African-American, Asian-American, or any other hyphenated American. Hyphens do nothing but separate us from what we truly are: Americans.  L...

Happy Independence Day / 4th of July!!

I have used this post for the four previous July 4th posts. I am using it again for two reasons - 1) I read it and I don't think I could improve upon it. Not that it is the best thing ever written. I just don't think I am capable of doing better and/or getting my point across. 2) I actually have had REQUESTS for it! (hey - more than 1 is plural) I am going to preface this a bit more. I read recently that a study and a couple of "man in the street" type interviews showed that a LOT of people here do not know the who, what, why, when, and/or where of July 4th. When asked what it is, the most common response was "Independence Day". When asked to elaborate, most could not. When pointedly asked who we attained independence from, a LOT did not know. The answers ranged from China to Germany and a lot in between. When asked when it occurred that also was missed by a majority. When you are having your gathering, cookout, picnic, or watching fireworks with frien...

A mind is a terrible thing - or mine is anyway...

My wife and I are on a bit of a road trip. We travelled to Nashville, Tennessee yesterday to meet with family members. The trip consists of about six hours of actual drive time and then you add in the stops for various and sundry things. That gave me over seven hours of time to let my mind wander. My mind wandering is kind of like a three year old at the mall - flitting here and there and no knowing where he is going next. One of the things I was thinking about was writing a post about the trip, so I traversed hither and yon with different comments based on the journey and travel in general. You will have to trust me when I tell you some of it was GREAT - because I don't remember any of the details of it. We had our usual bathroom trials and tribulations, but I have done that. If you are not aware of what I am talking about -see this: http://justsomeposts.blogspot.com/2009/03/to-pee-or-not-to-pee-with-apologies-to.html People have, and do, think I am weird (correctly so, in m...

Even More Headlines

More wacky headlines. You can't convince me that journalism school is not worth it! Teenage girls often have babies fathered by men Hey, in movies sometimes they are fathered by aliens. Sex Education Delayed, Teachers Request Training with lots of homework, I would guess. Lung Cancer in Women Mushrooms this discovery only became possible after we found a guy that can determine the gender of mushrooms. Include Your Children when Baking Cookies chocolate chips and raisins are soooo overrated. Infertility unlikely to be passed on maybe the first headline isn't so dumb afterall. Work after Death there are some TOUGH bosses out there - no time off for death, you slacker! Child's death ruins couple's holiday hopefully it didn't rain too. Milk drinkers are turning to powder I think I've seen this movie. Court Rules Boxer Shorts Are Indeed Underwear I'm waiting for the ruling on the thong. Hospitals are Sued by 7 Foot Doctors I got b...

How much do you weigh again?

If this were not true, it might be funny. Be afraid, be VERY afraid. I don't even know what to say about this one.... Do Fat People Cause Global Warming? Tuesday, April 21, 2009 AP The rising number of fat people was blamed for global warming on Monday. Scientists warned that the increase in big eaters means more food production — a major cause of CO2 gas emissions warming the planet. Overweight people are also more likely to drive, adding to environmental damage. Dr. Phil Edwards, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: "Moving about in a heavy body is like driving in a gas guzzler." Each fat person is said to be responsible for emitting a ton more of climate-warming carbon dioxide per year than a thin one. It means an extra billion tons of CO2 a year is created, according to World Health Organization estimates of overweight people. The scientists say providing extra grub for them to guzzle adds to carbon emissions that heat up the world...

Wanna buy an apple?

To get even more on this, as well as some background - see earlier posts like "Back in the USSA " and others. I am getting worried about the economy. Not for the same reasons as a lot of people, but worried none the less. As stated above, previously I let you know how I feel about these government "bailouts" that keep being thrown around like chicken feed. This is getting ridiculous! We (and yes it is WE!) are giving money to every industry and company that is having trouble. This cannot stand. There are constitutional reasons that should prevent this from happening. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of contitutionalist politicos or even voters around to recognize it or care about it. We won't go there (one of my first posts over a year ago addressed this). I will just keep this to the economic side of the argument. The first rule to remember is - THERE IS NO GOVERNMENT MONEY!! All together now - THERE IS NO GOVERNMENT MONEY. When you hear about a "sti...

Flu Seasonings

Well we are entering one of my favorite times of the year - Flu & Cold season! My family tells me (and truth be told, I admit) that I am a bit more germ-a-phobic than I was in my younger days. I am not to the Howard Hughes/Adrian Monk stage, but I find myself very uncomfortable in the presence of someone obviously sick with a cough, cold, or flu. One thing I have never understood is people that go to work deathly ill. That is how we all get sick people! Who are these creatures anyway? Most of the folks I have had working for me or with me over the years would stay home for a sick pet bird, much less for themselves! A scenario - I am traveling down the road and decide to take a bathroom break and maybe pick up a Slim Jim and drink. I stop at the convenience mart at the next exit and head in. Don't even get me started on the condition of most bathrooms, but I'm just saying: germ-avoidance is impossible here. Heading to the counter with my processed meat snack I hear a hackin...

A Thanksgiving THANKS (for bankruptcy)

I am an optimist at heart. Senator McCain was ridiculed during the campaign for saying the fundamentals of our economy are strong (there is another post a ways back about that, so read it if you care). They are. When allowed to function, the free market economy is the best system devised. Are there inequalities? - Yes. Are there people that will go broke? - Yes. But, if left to be truly free, there will be a much larger number of people that accumulate more wealth. Our problem now is we are being led into a disastrous economic situation by people that think the down times and the "losers" in a capitalistic system can be turned around and/or saved. That is insanity. There can be no good without bad. There can be no winner without losers. To appreciate the light, one must experience darkness. The "feel-good" notion that we can bail out all the downtrodden and speculators that lost, is not only wrong - it is suicidal to our economy. Here is a blog by a business repo...
